Construction Materials Special Inspector - Nashville and Clarksville, TN

The Special Inspector plays a crucial role in ensuring the overall quality and integrity of construction projects. The Special Inspector will monitor and observe construction activities to ensure the adherence to industry standards (ASTM, AASHTO) and project specifications. The Special Inspector will work closely with the TTL Project Manager(s) and Project Engineer(s), providing accurate data and insights to support project success.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Field Monitoring and Testing:
    • Observe and monitor various construction activities, including subgrade preparation, structural fill placement, proofrolling, footing excavation, bearing evaluations, and concrete/asphalt quality assurance.
    • Conduct critical inspections of construction elements such as reinforcement, post-tension elements, masonry, and wood framing to ensure compliance with plans, specifications, and applicable building codes.
    • Ability to identify and provide technical decisions related to project challenges in coordination with project managers(s) and project engineer(s).
    • Perform additional specialty testing on projects such as floor flatness, Windsor Probe testing, reinforcement scanning, concrete coring operations, etc.
  • Data Collection and Reporting:
    • Maintain accurate and detailed field notes, documenting observations and test results.
    • Prepare clear and concise reports summarizing field and laboratory findings.
    • Utilize specialized software to log and analyze data.
    • Review daily field reports of observations and testing performed by Project Technicians and Senior Project Technicians and prepare reports for delivery to the client for the Project Manager and/or Project Engineer.
  • Equipment and Safety:
    • Operate and maintain field and laboratory testing equipment according to company standards, manufacturer recommendations, and industry standards.
    • Adhere to all safety protocols and participate in safety training programs.
    • Maintain a clean and organized work environment.
  • Communication and Collaboration:
    • Foster seamless communication and collaboration: Ensure effective communication with all project stakeholders, provide timely updates, and proactively address challenges.
    • Cultivate strong relationships and guide team growth: Build and maintain positive internal and external relationships, while providing mentorship and supervision to fellow technicians.
    • Lead and empower technical excellence: Oversee personnel, prioritize client satisfaction, and champion in-house quality control. Coordinate and deliver comprehensive technical training, serving as the primary point of contact for technical team members.
    • Contribute to project success: Actively participate in project kick-off meetings and collaborate with project managers on financial aspects like invoicing and budget reviews.
  • Professional Development:
    • Pursue continuing education opportunities to maintain existing certifications and to enhance technical skills and knowledge.
    • Maintain relevant certifications as required (e.g., ACI, DOT, ICC, and/or NICET certifications).
    • Obtain laboratory experience working with soils, aggregates, concrete, and masonry materials.
    • TTL will provide safety training and certification preparatory training including:
      • 10-Hour OSHA Construction
      • Advanced certifications including ACI laboratory certification, ICC Special Inspector certifications, and other construction industry related certifications.

Qualifications:

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required, some college or technical training in the construction industry is preferred.
  • Experience: Prior experience (5+ years) in construction materials testing and inspection is preferred. Must hold a valid ACI Concrete Field-Testing Technician Grade I certification, Nuclear Gauge Radiation Safety Training, and hold 1 or more International Code Council Special Inspector certifications that are current.
    • Additional certifications, such as DOT-related courses and certifications, Post-Tension Institute Level I / II Unbonded Tendon certification, and NICET certifications a plus.
    • Ability to obtain additional ICC Special Inspector, American Concrete Institute, and NICET certifications.
  • Skills:
    • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
    • Ability to work independently and especially in a team environment.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

Additional Information:

    • This position requires a balance of working in a field and in a professional office environment.
    • Project schedules often dictate working hours. Therefore, the candidate should understand that work schedules will vary (early mornings, late evenings). Some weekend work will be required.
    • Roundtrip travel to jobsites will be required (typically less than 100 miles); however, opportunities for out-of-town work (regional) may be necessary to support other TTL offices.
