Description

Job Purpose: Performs a variety of patient care activities to assist providers and nurses.



Essential Functions: (Examples of Duties)


  1. Greets and escorts patients to exam room using appropriate procedures and in a timely fashion.
  2. Takes vital signs and assists patients in patient flow through the office.
  3. Prepares exam rooms and instruments for examination and testing. Stocks supplies. Sterilizes instruments when used or assigned.
  4. Labels and maintains proper storage for specimens and tests. Delivers tests and obtains results.
  5. Assists provider with minor diagnostic procedures and treatments as directed. In-office surgery, sterile technique. Obtains consents for procedures.
  6. Processes prescription refills as directed by provider.
  7. Observes, records, and reports patient’s condition and reaction to drugs and treatments to physicians. Administers prescribed medications and treatments as directed.
  8. Works clinical inbox of the provider.
  9. Understands basic insurance processes for ordering and scheduling specific diagnostic studies, referrals, supplies, and prescriptions.
  10. Performs telephone triage per established guidelines and documents accordingly.
  11. Coordinates and schedules surgeries, procedures, preoperative appointments and follow-up appointments as designated by physicians according to established policies and procedures.
  12. Interact with patients', physicians and other staff within the clinic and at outside facilities providing accurate, timely and responsive information.
  13. Coordinate arrangements for special equipment, and surgical materials, obtains authorization for surgery from patient's insurance company, and submits patient clinical and financial information to facility assuring appropriate medical records release, if needed.
  14. Provide patient with preoperative information sheets and advise patients of preoperative surgical and financial requirements.
  15. Review financial and clinical paperwork to assure completion before the scheduled procedure or surgery date.
  16. Answer and screen telephone calls in a courteous manner, and record messages for physician and other personnel.
  17. Obtain accurate information from patients and ensure all registration forms are complete.
  18. File records in appropriate sections of patient electronic or paper charts and keep patient charts in proper order.
  19. Attends required meetings, in-services and participates in committee work as requested.
  20. Maintains patient confidentiality.
  21. Performs related work as required.

Qualifications

Job Requirements/Qualifications: (Describe minimum qualifications, preferred or required)

Education: Graduation from an accredited medical assisting or nursing program.


Experience: Minimum of 1 year clinical experience in an outpatient medical office using an EHR.



Knowledge and Skills: Knowledge of examination, diagnostic and treatment room procedures. Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to maintain a safe work environment.


Skill in taking vital signs. Skill in maintaining records and recording test results. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, staff and the public.

Ability to maintain quality control standards. Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations. Ability to read, understand and respond to detailed oral and written instructions. Ability to communicate clearly. Accurately and thoroughly document medical information. Ability to correctly spell, use appropriate grammar and punctuation.


Licenses/Certifications: Valid state LPN license, if applicable. CPR certification.



Working Conditions: Exposure to communicable, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a clinic environment.


Physical Demands: Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time. May be require to help lift/transfer patient. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Requires working under stressful conditions and irregular hours. Requires some exposure to communicable diseases or bodily fluids.
