Job Purpose: The laboratory supervisor, under the direction of the laboratory director, assists in the day-to-day supervision of testing personnel and reporting of test results. In the absence of the laboratory director, the laboratory supervisor must be responsible for the proper performance of all laboratory procedures and reporting of test results.
Essential Functions: (Examples of Duties)
- Meets all responsibility requirements of the Administrative Director of Laboratory Services as defined and as applicable in state law.
- Must be accessible to the laboratory to provide on-site, telephone, or electronic consultation
- Ensuring that patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is functioning properly
- Identifying training needs and assuring that each individual performing tests receives regular in-service training and education appropriate for the type and complexity of the laboratory services performed
- Evaluating the competency of all testing personnel and assuring that the staff maintain their competency to perform test procedures and report test results promptly, accurately, and proficiently. The methods for evaluation of the competency of the staff must include, but are not limited to—
- Direct observations of routine patient test performance, including patient preparation, if applicable, specimen handling, processing, and testing
- Monitoring the recording and reporting of test results;
- Review of intermediate test results or worksheets, quality control records, proficiency testing results, and preventive maintenance records;
- Direct observation of the performance of instrument maintenance and functions checks;
- Assessment of test performance through testing previously analyzed specimens, internal blind testing samples, or external proficiency testing samples; and
- Assessment of problem-solving skills
- Evaluating and documenting the performance of individuals responsible for high complexity testing at least semiannually during the first year the individual tests patient specimens. Thereafter, evaluations must be performed at least annually unless test methodology or instrumentation changes, in which case, prior to reporting patient test results, the individual’s performance must be reevaluated to include the use of the new test methodology or instrumentation.
- Scheduling personnel to meet the needs of the site’s providers, to include scheduling vacation time and covering sick time scheduled and unscheduled
- The supervisor is responsible for assisting in oversight of day-to-day supervision of test performance by testing personnel
- Responsible for assisting in maintaining the established quality control program appropriate for the testing performed and maintaining the parameters for acceptable levels of analytic performance and ensuring that these levels are maintained throughout the entire testing process from the initial receipt of the specimen through sample analysis and reporting of test results.
- Responsible for helping to resolve technical problems and ensuring that remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.
- Responsible for ensuring that patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is functioning properly.
- Responsible for providing orientation to all testing personnel
- Assisting in the process for evaluating the competency of all testing personnel and assuring that the staff maintains their competency to perform test procedures and report test results promptly, accurately, and proficiently
- Annually assisting in evaluating and documenting the performance of all testing personnel
- Authorized to sign the attestation statement on proficiency testing result submission forms when applicable.
Qualifications
Job Requirements/Qualifications: (Describe minimum qualifications, preferred or required)
Education: Bachelors Degree as a Medical Technologist, or Associates Degree as a Medical Laboratory Technician
Experience: 1 year of supervisory experience preferred
Knowledge and Skills:
- Excellent customer relations skills
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills
- Experience with regulatory and accreditation of laboratory operations
Licenses/Certifications:
- Board registered as a Medical Technologist with one of the National Registries associated with laboratory practice or certified as a Medical Laboratory Technician with 2 years of experience in area of supervision
Working Conditions:
- Frequent contact with water (hand washing and cleaning), bio hazardous body fluids, and hazardous chemicals
- Sufficient noise and interruptions to cause distraction and stress
- Hazardous working conditions in which individual is exposed to definite risk of bodily injury through contact with moving instrumentations, chemicals, and/or body fluids
- Certain incidental functions may require use of protective gear such as face shields, gloves, and fluid-resistant coats.
Physical Demands:
- Medium work of lifting up to 50 pounds and/or carrying objects weighing up to 25 pounds
- Responsible for lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling objects
