JOB PURPOSE:

The Medical Laboratory Clinical Consultant is to provide technical and scientific oversight of each of the specialties of service in which the laboratory performs testing. The consultant interfaces with the administration and laboratory staff, vendors, leadership during all applications of the position. Provide expertise in the setup of new clinical laboratory testing, to include moderate level of complexity. Provides guidance in layout, organization, efficient standards of practice and logistical concerns through implementation process.

Board certified clinical physician that meets the qualifications of Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act of 1988

WORKING CONDITIONS:

1. Frequent contact with water (hand washing and cleaning), bio hazardous body fluids, and hazardous chemicals

2. Sufficient noise and interruptions to cause distraction and stress

3. Hazardous working conditions in which individual is exposed to definite risk of bodily injury through contact with moving instrumentation, chemicals, and/or body fluids

4. Certain incidental functions may require use of protective gear such as face shields, gloves, and fluid-resistant coats.

SCOPE OF POSITION:
Primary responsibility is assisting with the set up of creating procedural guidelines, assist with laboratory related insurance and billing, and ensure the experiment follows safety standards and regulatory requirements.

  • Serves as the Clinical Laboratory Consultant for a laboratory that is performing moderate complexity clinical analysis.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert and provides expert consultation services with technical advice and guidance on matters relating to the quality of the clinical test results reported and their interpretation.
  • Ensure that clinical testing developed and used for each of the tests performed in the laboratory provide quality laboratory services for all aspects of test performance, which includes the pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic phases of testing.
  • Provide guidance with LIS insurance tables and assist with preventing insurance related denials.
  • The laboratory consultant must be accessible to the laboratory to provide onsite, telephone or electronic consultation as needed.

Licenses/Certifications:
• Board registered as a medical technologist with one of the National Registries associated
with laboratory practice
• Licensed/eligible in the State of Tennessee as a Medical Laboratory Supervisor
