Description

Job Purpose: Under the general supervision of the Laboratory Supervisor or Director of
Laboratory Services, the Lead Phlebotomist assists the supervisor with scheduling, training, and
assigning phlebotomists to meet the needs of the work areas. Provides input into developing or
revising policies and procedures and assures implementation. Check phlebotomy binders to
make sure procedures are being followed and performed. Assists in the supervision of the
phlebotomists and clerical staff. Regularly performs duties of phlebotomists.

Essential Functions:
1. Acts as a resource to employees, which includes training/orienting and providing day-to-day
work direction.
2. Assigns, monitors, and reviews progress and accuracy of work, monitors productivity,
maintains appropriate staffing levels, directs efforts, and provides guidance on more complex
issues.
3. Assists with human resource responsibilities, which may include interviewing and selection
of new employees, staff development, resolution of employee concerns, and employee morale.
4. Monitors and coordinates the workflow of the department. This includes specimen collection,
processing, and ordering functions.
5. Answers and appropriately handles telephone calls.
6. Assists with inventory and helps maintain supplies by stocking draw room and/or equipment.
7. Assist with scheduling and finding coverage for call-outs.
8. Responsible for covering shifts that cannot otherwise be covered.
9. Performs testing and patient collecting duties per protocols/procedures.
10. Demonstrates competence in all procedures required by a Medical Technologist.
11. Follows the laboratory’s procedure for specimen handling and processing, test analysis,
reporting, and maintaining records of patient test results.
12. Maintain records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same
manner as patient specimens.
13. Adhere to the laboratory’s quality control policies, and document all quality control
activities, instrument, and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.
14. Follow the laboratory’s established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not
within the laboratory’s established acceptable levels of performance.
15. Be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of
test results, and either must correct the problems or immediately notify the Laboratory
Supervisor or Director of Laboratory Services.
16. Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s
established performance specifications.
17. Train all phlebotomy personnel in collecting and LIS functions essential to job duties.
18. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Job Requirements/Qualifications:

Education:
HS Diploma and accredited Phlebotomy Program certificate of completion

Experience:
Minimum of 5 years of phlebotomy experience is required.
Prefer candidates with prior experience in supervision.

Knowledge and Skills:
• Excellent customer relations skills
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Attention to detail and concentration
• Ability to work in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment

Licenses/Certifications:
Applicant must have a phlebotomy certification from a nationally recognized accrediting institution.

Working Conditions:
• Frequent contact with water (hand washing and cleaning), biohazard body fluid, and hazardous
chemicals
• Sufficient noise and interruptions cause distractions and stress
• Hazardous working conditions in which individuals are exposed to definite risk of bodily
injury through contact with moving instrumentations, chemicals, and/or body fluids • Certain
incidental functions may require the use of protective gear such as face shields, gloves, and
fluid-resistant coats

Physical Demands:
• Medium work of lifting up to 50 pounds and/or carrying objects weighing up to 25
pounds
• Responsible for lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling objects
