JOB QUALIFICATIONS – KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
- Various equipment consistent for this position.
- Safe operation and maintenance of tools, equipment and facility systems.
- Personal Protective Equipment.
- Working knowledge of occupational hazards (OSHA) and safe work practices.
- Administrative policies and procedures of the County.
- Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
Skill in:

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work environment includes frequent exposure to wet or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and outdoor weather conditions.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS/ACTIVITIES:
- This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of lifting/moving or force and occasional lift, move or drag 100 pounds or more while performing essential functions of the job.
- Work regularly requires the ability to stand, walk, sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; and speak and hear.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance and peripheral vision; depth perception; and the ability to adjust focus.
- Acceptable verbal and conversation skills to effectively communicate with others in English.
- Ability to read and write English and interpret documents such as safety rules, material safety data sheets, operation and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and so forth.
- Ability to recognize occupational hazards in work activities and take safety precautions.
- Work is frequently performed in a noisy environment around mechanical equipment.
- Work may include outdoors in seasonal weather extremes.
- Exposures could include toxic chemicals, seasonal temperature extremes, bodily fluids, infectious diseases and hazardous waste; treated human feces, and other possible unknown hazardous materials.

Starting hourly rate: $17.30
Minimum Experience: Three (3) to six (6) months of similar experience.
Minimum Education: High School diploma or equivalent is preferred.
Certifications, Licenses:
- Must hold a valid driver’s license.
- A pre-employment criminal background check is required.

GENERAL POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following duties are normal for this position. However, they are not to be construed as exclusive or all–inclusive. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. Other duties may also be required or assigned.
- Safely operates assigned trucks and construction equipment, machinery, and tools for highway and bridge construction and maintenance, and maintenance materials handling.
- Responds to weather situations including snow and ice events, high water, washouts, and others as directed.
- Responds to unforeseen emergency situations including cargo spills, traffic accidents, blocked roads, pavement buckles, and others as directed.
- Performs general highway maintenance and related activities as assigned, including temporary and permanent asphalt surface repairs, patching holes, sawing pavement, concrete repairs, bridge work and repair, guardrail repair, sign repair, clearing brush, hauling materials, flagging traffic, roadway vegetation control, sweeping intersections, sealing road cracks, removing dead animals, trash, etc.
- Serves as a flagman to direct flow of traffic for workers and equipment to ensure safety. Uses two-way radio to assist in signaling flagman at the other end.
- Places cones and traffic signs in designated work areas.
- Operates brush cutters, power saws, asphalt kettles, jackhammers, weed sprayers, hand mowers, and various hand tools.
- May perform painting and striping of roadways.
- May run baking sign and die cutting machines.
- Performs daily inspection and service to equipment. Maintains records of inspection and services.
- Performs minor repairs, maintenance, and preventative maintenance to assigned equipment as scheduled or directed.
- Ensures all activities are carried out in a safe manner; adheres to all County safety regulations; assists co-workers in the safe handling of equipment; ensures equipment is safely operated and driving laws are obeyed; ensures all regulations pertaining to the safe use of equipment are understood and followed.
- Reports all accidents to the appropriate authority. Follows all policies for reporting, investigating, and follow-up of equipment incidents or personal injuries.
- Cleans and maintains equipment and storage area.
- Other duties as assigned.
FISCAL RESPONSIBILITIES
This position has no fiscal responsibilities.
COUNTY ORGANIZATION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Represents the Department and County to other County staff and members of the public.
- Provides quality customer service to individuals needing directions or assistance.
- Demonstrates the organization’s Core Values and adherence to the Ethics policy.
SUPERVISORY RELATIONSHIPS:
Works under direct supervision of the Foreman. Incumbent has no supervisory responsibilities.
