JOB QUALIFICATIONS – KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
- Basic practices, methods, and equipment used in grounds maintenance and general maintenance work.
- Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
- Hazardous chemicals, herbicides and fertilizers.
- Excellent public contact and customer service skills.
- Operation and maintenance of all light and some heavy power-driven equipment.
- Practices, methods, and materials used in grounds maintenance and general maintenance work.
- Traffic laws and ordinances and rules involved in heavy equipment operations.
- Utility markings and clearances and rules for safe equipment operation in close proximity to underground and overhead utility facilities.
- Construction industry safety rules and ability to utilize all Personal Protective Equipment necessary.
- Knowledge of legal load limits for assigned equipment and vehicles.
Skill in:
- Operating and maintaining all assigned vehicles or equipment.
- Performing a variety of semi-skilled maintenance tasks.
- Perform a variety of manual tasks for extended periods of time in unfavorable weather conditions.
- Reading and interpreting policy and procedure manuals.
- Communicating clearly and concisely primarily in verbal form.
Ability to:
- Perform heavy manual labor.
- Ability to establish and maintain accurate records of assigned activities and operations.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work environment includes frequent exposure to wet or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and outdoor weather conditions.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS/ACTIVITIES:
- This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 75 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, frequently requires using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions and requires walking on uneven terrain, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, climbing stairs and ladders, and reaching with hands and arms.
- Work regularly requires the ability to stand, walk, sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; balance, stoop, kneel crouch or crawl; and speak and hear.
- Ability to recognize occupational hazards in work activities and take safety precautions.
- Work may be performed above or below ground, to include confined spaces.
- Work is frequently performed in a noisy environment around mechanical equipment.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance and peripheral vision; depth perception; and the ability to adjust focus.
- Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
- Acceptable verbal and conversation skills to effectively communicate with others in English.
- Ability to read and write English and interpret documents such as safety rules, material safety data sheets, operation and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and so forth.
- Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
- Duties are performed daily both indoors and outdoors under all weather conditions and include exposure to inclement weather, noise, heavy traffic conditions, exhaust fumes, and pesticide.
- Maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of making sound decisions and following directions.

Starting hourly rate: $22.83
Minimum Experience: One year of general maintenance, light equipment operation or related experience.
Minimum Education: High School diploma or equivalent.
Certifications, Licenses:
- Must hold a valid Driver’s license and a valid CDL A or B.
- A pre-employment criminal background check and submission to drug testing for commonly-abused controlled substances is required.

GENERAL POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following duties are normal for this position. However, they are not to be construed as exclusive or all–inclusive. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. Other duties may also be required or assigned.
- Operates light equipment such as mower, tractor, mower trim, chipper, front-end loader and dump truck to perform assigned tasks relating to roadsides and right of way maintenance.
- Drives various trucks and equipment to transport and load and/or unload materials such as hot mix, dirt, rock, wood, etc. at a designated highway construction site.
- Erects traffic signs near construction areas and flags traffic through and around construction or work areas.
- Performs roadside duties, including mowing and planting grass seed; pruning and removal of trees; chipping brush and removing debris.
- Performs temporary and permanent asphalt surface repairs, patching holes; operates sweeper to clean/prepare parking lots to be paved.
- May operate street roller to spread hot or cold mix when tying driveway to road.
- May operate snowplow and salt spreader truck when inclement weather occurs.
- Maintains ditch, waterways, and storm drain for proper drainage as needed.
- Inspects truck to make sure truck and equipment are operating properly and safely. Performs routine maintenance on light equipment and trucks.
- Ensures all work is done according to standard practices, design specifications, and County and local building codes.
- Ensures all activities are carried out in a safe manner; adheres to all County safety regulations; ensures all regulations pertaining to the safe use of equipment are understood and followed.
- Reports all accidents to the appropriate authority. Follows all policies for reporting.
- Able to work overtime, weekends, and holidays as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
FISCAL RESPONSIBILITIES
This position has no fiscal responsibilities.
COUNTY ORGANIZATION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Represents the Department and County to other County staff and members of the public.
- Provides quality customer service to individuals needing directions or assistance.

SUPERVISORY RELATIONSHIPS:
Works under direct supervision of the Foreman. Incumbent has no supervisory responsibilities.
