GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

Pump/Lift Station Mechanic I
This is the first of three levels in the Distribution/Collection System Maintenance series. Skilled incumbents assist in the maintenance and repair of water and/or wastewater equipment in the Water Distribution System and/or Wastewater Collection System. Responsibilities may include the maintenance of pumps, valves, water tanks, backflow preventers, piping, and related mechanical and electrical components; fabricate equipment; monitoring equipment functionality; monitoring inventory of parts, equipment, and materials; and maintaining records of work performed utilizing a preventative maintenance program, flushing program, cross-connection program, etc.

Pump/Lift Station Mechanic II
This is the second of three levels in the Distribution/Collection System Maintenance series. Previously trained and skilled incumbents maintain and repair mechanical and electrical systems in the Water Distribution System and/or Wastewater Collection System. Responsibilities include installing and repairing electrical wiring; maintaining and repairing pumps, valves, piping, water tank equipment, backflow preventers and related components ensuring proper operation of assigned facilities; ordering equipment and materials; supervising and/or training lower-level employees when assigned by supervisor; and performing the duties of lower-level position(s).


***THIS POSITION REQUIRES THE ABILITY TO CLIMB WATER TOWERS TO HEIGHTS OF 200+ FEET WITH PROPER SAFETY EQUIPMENT.***

Example of Duties

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Functions - Pump/Lift Station Mechanic I:
  1. Inspects, maintains, and repairs specialized mechanical or electrical equipment and machinery utilizing specialized tools, which includes maintaining pumps, valves, piping, and related components; ensuring component oil levels are properly adjusted; fabricate or repair equipment; monitoring equipment; maintain water storage tanks, flushing program, and backflow prevention equipment; handling customer complaints and/or performing related duties.

  2. Assists in maintaining and repairing electronic and electrical equipment related to the operation of assigned facility under supervisor's direction.

  3. Fabricates or repairs equipment; monitors equipment; and maintains other domestic duties related to water and/or wastewater pumping stations.

  4. Complies with all local, state, and federal regulations pertaining to Water Distribution and/or Wastewater Collections systems.

  5. Trains to and maintains records and logs of systems operation and maintenance activities.

  6. Assists in monitoring and maintaining inventory, supplies, parts, and equipment, as necessary.

  7. Performs other work as required.

Essential Functions - Pump/Lift Station Mechanic II:
  1. Performs skilled mechanical repairs on several types of specialized equipment and related electrical/electronic systems which includes calibrating analytical equipment; fabricating parts for and/or repairing pumps, motors, hoists, and valves, water storage tank components, and/or pump station/lift station components; performing duties in maintaining flushing program, cross-connection program, etc.; and performing related duties.

  2. Performs skilled preventative maintenance on equipment and systems which includes inspecting, diagnosing, and troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, and/or electronic issues.

  3. Coordinates with contractors, consultants, and other third-party entities to establish and schedule work being done at pumping/booster stations; handles customer complaints.

  4. Complies with all local, state, and federal regulations pertaining to Water Distribution and/or Wastewater Collections systems.

  5. Maintains records and logs of systems operation and maintenance activities utilizing a preventative maintenance program.

  6. Monitors and maintains inventory; ordering supplies and equipment, as necessary.

  7. Performs other work as required.


Typical Qualifications

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND TRAINING

Education and Experience - Pump/Lift Station Mechanic I:

  • High school graduate or GED equivalent.

  • One (1) year of experience in utility maintenance, construction, distribution, and/or meter reading or welding, plumbing and mechanical maintenance and repair.

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform the job's essential duties.


License and Certifications - Pump/Lift Station Mechanic I:
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.

  • CDL may be required for positions in certain assignment areas.


Education and Experience - Pump/Lift Station Mechanic II:
  • High school graduate or GED equivalent.

  • Two (2) years of experience in utility maintenance, construction, distribution, and/or meter reading or welding, plumbing, and mechanical maintenance and repair.

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform the job's essential duties.


License and Certifications - Pump/Lift Station Mechanic II:
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.

  • CDL may be required for positions in certain assignment areas.

  • Position typically requires one or more of the following in certain assignment areas:

    • TN Grade II Water Distribution System Operator Certification

    • TN Grade II Wastewater Collection System Operator Certification

    • Three (3) Years of experience in wastewater collection (in lieu of TN Grade II Wastewater Collection System Operator Certification)

    • Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester Certification

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS (Both Pump/Lift Station Mechanic I & Pump/Lift Station Mechanic II):

The work is heavy work which requires exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:


  • Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing, or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces. The amount of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.

  • Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized.

  • Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.

  • Feeling: Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature, or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.

  • Fingering: Picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.

  • Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.

  • Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discrimination sound.

  • Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.

  • Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. It occurs to a considerable degree and requires substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.

  • Will be required to work in inclement weather and dirty/wet conditions.
