CLASS SUMMARY:
This is the first of nine levels in the Police series. Incumbents attend an approved Police officer Standard Training (P.O.S.T.) Commission Basic Law Enforcement School, complete required training, and receive their peace officer certification.

Starting Salary: $47,480
After completion of the Police Academy salary will be: $49,855

Example of Duties

TYPICAL CLASS ESSENTIAL DUTIES: (These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.)
  1. Attends the police academy, which includes completing required training and academy courses, receiving peace officer certification, and performing related duties.
  2. May assist police officers with daily assignments, which could include ride-alongs, transmitting radio messages, retrieving and filing information, assisting with fingerprinting, and performing related duties.
  3. Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

Typical Qualifications

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (positions in this class typically require):
High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.); or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

RESIDENCE REQUIREMENTS (positions in this class typically require):
  • Must reside within a 60-minute drive time (obeying all traffic laws) to Police Headquarters at 135 Commerce Street upon completion of the Field Training Program.

Knowledge of:
  • Basic work etiquette.

Skill in:
  • Following written and oral instructions;
  • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Positions in this class typically require: balancing, stooping, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, running, lifting, fingering, grasping, physically restraining subjects, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions. (All activities may need to be performed with no warning and chance to stretch/warm up.)

Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Incumbents may be subjected to fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, oils, bodily fluids, bloodborne pathogens, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, intense noises, weapons, violence, and possible injuries.
