CLASS SUMMARY
This is the first of three levels in the Legal series.  Incumbents provide legal advice and services as assigned to department heads, and City committees and boards.  Responsibilities may include preparing and/or reviewing and approving contracts, deeds, bonds, ordinances, resolutions and similar documents; preparing and filing legal pleadings, motions, briefs and other documents; and conducting depositions, trials and appeals.

CLASS SUMMARY
This is the second of three levels in the Legal series.  Incumbents provide legal advice and services to the Mayor, City Council, department heads, and City committees and boards.  Responsibilities may include representing the City in legal matters; preparing and/or reviewing and approving all contracts, deeds, bonds, ordinances, resolutions and similar documents; preparing and filing legal pleadings, motions, briefs and other documents; and conducting depositions, trials and appeals.

THIS JOB ANNOUNCEMENT PROVIDES THE QUALIFICATIONS FOR BOTH AN ASSISITANT CITY ATTORNEY I AND AN ASSISTANT CITY ATTORNEY II POSITION. Example of Duties
TYPICAL CLASS ESSENTIAL DUTIES: (These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.)
  • Provides general legal guidance to internal staff, department heads, and City committees and boards, which includes preparing a variety of legal documents.
  • Reviews contracts, deeds, bonds, ordinances, and resolutions to verify appropriateness of terms, conditions, and applicable clauses
  • Prepares and files legal pleadings, motions, briefs, and related documents.
  • Conducts depositions, trials, and appeals.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
TYPICAL CLASS ESSENTIAL DUTIES: (These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.)
  • Provides general legal guidance to the Mayor, City council, department heads, and City committees and boards, which includes preparing a variety of legal documents.
  • Prepares cases for hearings and trials.
  • Represents the City in litigation proceedings in court, which includes: determining procedural avenues for actions; attending depositions; making strategic and tactical litigation decisions; and/or performing related activities.
  • Reviews contracts, deeds, bonds, ordinances, and resolutions to verify appropriateness of terms, conditions, and applicable clauses.
  • Prepares and files legal pleadings, motions, briefs, and related documents.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
Typical Qualifications
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (positions in this class typically require):
Doctor of Jurisprudence; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (positions in this class typically require):
Doctor of Jurisprudence and three years experience as a practicing attorney; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

  • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with subordinates, coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Positions in this class typically require: reaching, standing, walking, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
 
Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.  Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time.  Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.
