The Academic Advisor has primary responsibility of advising and retention of business majors. Advisors will be supporting students from specific college programs. Advisors will additionally support university wide retention initiatives that supports all APSU students.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Advise a caseload of business students to support their success at APSU.

Be a proactive and constructive participant within an advising team dedicated to student success.

Provide proactive advising using techniques such as motivational interviewing and appreciative advising framework.

Support student retention by working with advisees in academic difficulty and recommending appropriate

actions and resources.

Utilize retention data to inform decisions on student advising initiatives

Track and manage Academic Alerts on all assigned advisees.

Assist students in the process of declaring or changing a major.

Participate in retention initiatives sponsored by the department, college, or university.

Help students understand university and degree requirements, interpret a degree evaluation, and develop a responsible approach to academic planning.

Be knowledgeable of all business programs at the university; maintain awareness of and integrate revisions in departmental requirements.

Support the College of Business Success Coordinator in planning the logistics and the advisement of students at Govs R

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Ability to efficiently operate a personal computer and associated software (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.) and SungardHE Banner.

Knowledge of university and degree requirements.

Ability to work with diverse populations, to establish rapport with university students, and to interact with family members.

Ability to maintain accurate files and records of student contacts, both electronically and on paper.

Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Ability to communicate effectively and appropriately, both verbally and in writing.

Ability to work in a team environment as well as complete tasks individually.

Ability to apply student development and career development theories.

Commitment to keeping abreast of current advisement literature and practices.

Knowledgeable of FERPA.

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university

Experience working in an educational and/or university setting.

Ability to work flexible hours to include evenings and weekends..

Physical Requirements:

Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects .
