Position Summary Information
Position Summary
This position is under general supervision of the Grounds Lead Worker and performs varying types of buildings and grounds maintenance depending on the season. The incumbent drives and operates all vehicles and equipment assigned to Horticulture and Grounds.

Austin Peay State University is a four-year public, doctoral-level university, with six colleges and four Chairs of Excellence. The University has an enrollment of over 10,000 students and is located in Clarksville, Tennessee, a community of an estimated 180,000 people located approximately 40 miles northwest of Nashville, TN
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Drive all Grounds vehicles, to include UTVs, pick-up trucks, vans, small dump truck.
  • Operate and maintain self-contained mowers, blowers, string trimmers, hedge trimmers, chain saws and other motorized equipment.
  • Cut grass, weed-eat, rake, vacuum leaves, etc.
  • Clear snow and ice from sidewalks, road ways and parking lots.
  • Operate tractors and associated attachments
  • Work as part of a construction crew to repair and install sidewalks, patch holes using asphalt hot mix, paint curbs and parking lanes and repair and build fences.
  • Install regulatory and directional signs as directed.
  • Lay-out and paint the athletic fields for football, band camps, etc.
  • Load and unload dirt, gravel, sand, trash, etc., using hand tools and vehicular type loaders.
  • Remove debris from street right-of-ways and other campus property.
  • Support other departments of Physical Plant with manpower and equipment.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to safely operate motorized vehicles.
  • Ability to work overtime as needed.
  • Ability to effectively use painting equipment associated with curb painting and parking lot striping.
  • Ability to properly use basic hand tools such as hedge trimmer, weedeater, shovel, etc.
  • Ability to effectively operate farm-type equipment, self contained mowers and landscape equipment.
  • Ability to recognize occupational hazards and take appropriate safety precautions.
  • Ability to carry out simple oral instructions.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods under some unfavorable climatic conditions.
  • Ability to interact in an effective and appropriate manner with various populations, the University community and the public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Physical Requirements
  • Heavy Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Must wear proper PPE (safety shoes and eye protection) as required.


Required Minimum Qualifications
  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • A minimum of one (1) year of landscaping or grounds maintenance experience or a minimum of two (2) years of work experience operating farm-type tractors and farm type equipment.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • A background check will be required of the successful applicant.
