Position Summary
The Library Assistant (Night Shift Supervisor) works under the supervision of the Circulation and Information Commons Supervisor and is responsible for work related to the general operation of the Access Services unit (circulation and information commons) during the library’s evening hours. During fall and spring semesters, the work week for the position is Sunday through Thursday, 3:30 p.m. to midnight, and requires varying work schedules during intersessions, summer sessions, and as directed.

Austin Peay State University is a four-year public, doctoral-level university, with six colleges and four Chairs of Excellence. The University has an enrollment of over 10,000 students and is located in Clarksville, Tennessee, a community of an estimated 180,000 people located approximately 40 miles northwest of Nashville, TN.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Supervise circulation and information commons activities during evening hours. Monitor behavior of library users during evening hours, and work with them to keep behavior and noise under control.
  • Maintain a safe and secure environment for library users and staff, and help ensure library facilities and resources are secure.
  • Staff the circulation desk as scheduled. Perform access services activities such as checking library materials in and out, receiving fines and fees, creating and maintaining patron information in the integrated library system, clearing holds in the university’s Banner system, and assisting users with printers and other library equipment.
  • Develop and maintain familiarity with library services and resources, and provide basic reference services and technology assistance to library users.
  • Supervise and train library student assistants working at night, ensuring that they provide appropriate service to library users and contribute to the effective operation of the library. Consult with the Circulation & Information Commons Supervisor about student assistant performance issues, and work with the Supervisor to find ways to address and solve them.
  • Communicate regularly with the Circulation & Information Commons Supervisor to keep up-to-date on university and library issues. Inform the Supervisor, the Access Services Coordinator and the Director of Library Services about issues or problems that arise during evening hours.
  • Communicate with campus police, custodians, and maintenance technicians about various building issues and problems that may arise during evening hours.
  • Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on printers, photocopiers and microform reader-printers.
  • Monitor and maintain statistics for computer usage, headcount, door count, etc.
  • Serve on university and library committees as appropriate.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and workflows.
  • Ability to learn and perform circulation, information commons and basic reference functions.
  • Ability to supervise student assistants effectively and to complete all associated personnel actions in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer and associated software (e.g., MS Word, Excel) and to learn specific applications such as Ellucian Banner and III Sierra.
  • Ability to maintain files accurately, in paper and in software programs.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information.
  • Ability to be punctual and to work a varying schedule.
  • Ability to perform routine maintenance on printers, copiers and microform reader-printers.
  • Ability to read printed materials and computer screens.
  • Ability to lift up to twenty pounds, and to retrieve and transport library materials from shelves.
Physical Requirements
  • Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
Required Minimum Qualifications
  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Prior work experience providing customer service and/or security.
  • Computer literacy and previous experience using MS Office Suite and Web browsers.
  • A background check will be required of the successful applicant.
