Position Summary
The Assistant Director, Instructional Design (ADID) reports to the Director of Distance Education and provides instructional design and instructional technology support for online, face-to-face, and hybrid courses. This position is responsible for managing, developing, and facilitating instructional design projects, instructional technology resources, and training for faculty focusing on online learning design and pedagogy. The ADID builds relationships across academic departments, develops strategies for marketing instructional design services, and leads instructional design initiatives. The position supervises and facilitates instructional design staff in the Department of Distance Education.

Austin Peay State University is a four-year public, doctoral-level university, with six colleges and four Chairs of Excellence. The University has an enrollment of over 10,000 students and is located in Clarksville, Tennessee, a community of an estimated 180,000 people located approximately 40 miles northwest of Nashville, TN.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Supervise, manage, and evaluate staff responsible for conducting course reviews, curating instructional content, improving online teaching practices, and increasing the accessibility of instructional materials.
  • Analyze and establish instructional design team processes, procedures, and scope of work.
  • Lead and manage complex instructional design projects that require coordinating staff, faculty and resources, both within the Distance Education Department as well as across campus units.
  • Oversee course review processes for online/hybrid courses from inception to completion.
  • Conduct online/hybrid course reviews based on research-based instructional design and adult learning theory principles.
  • Develop, coordinate, and facilitate training sessions, workshops, and other professional development opportunities that help faculty integrate instructional design best practices.
  • Implement processes for regular reporting, user feedback, auditing, and updates of instructional design projects. Analyze reports and feedback to inform decisions.
  • Serve as an accessibility subject matter expert and develop strategies to educate and assist university stakeholders to ensure digital course materials, multimedia projects, and instructional technology are compliant with current standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
  • Collaborate with Instructional Technology and LMS teams to ensure best practices and instructional design principles are integrated into user support resources and trainings.
  • Develop communication and marketing plans to increase awareness, engagement, and evaluation of instructional design services.
  • Manage contracts for online/hybrid course quality assurance programs (e.g. Quality Matters) and ID-related technology. Responsible for new contracts, annual renewals, amendments as needed, and regular contract monitoring.
  • Test and evaluate teaching and learning technologies and applications to assess feasibility of their adoption.
  • Pursue knowledge of current and emerging technology, technology implementation and adoption practices, and teaching, and learning trends in higher education.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Communication skills and the ability to interact effectively and appropriately with users of varying technical expertise, differing abilities, and learning styles including vendors, various populations, the University community, and the public.

  • Effective decision making and organization skills including the ability to supervise multiple large projects and personnel, prioritize, and meet deadlines.
  • Presentation skills including the ability to develop, lead, and evaluate trainings, resources, marketing, and communications.
  • Technical knowledge (personal computers, hardware, software programs, technical concepts, etc.), ability to support others in use, and ability to serve as system admin for multiple platforms overseeing technology management and support.
  • Knowledge of instructional technology best practices and the ability to evaluate tools for effective implementation in the online, hybrid, and face-to-face learning environment.
Physical Requirements
  • Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
Required Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, Educational Technology, Curriculum Design, or related field.
  • Previous experience in online course design and delivery.
  • Previous experience assisting educators in using technology to enhance teaching practices.
  • Previous experience in creating and delivering instruction (i.e. teaching experience or facilitating instruction).
  • A background check will be required of the successful applicant.
