Position Summary
The Technical Director is responsible to coordinate all activities in the George and Sharon Mabry Concert Hall. The Technical Director reports directly to the Chair of the Department of Music.

Austin Peay State University is a four-year public, doctoral-level university, with six colleges and four Chairs of Excellence. The University has an enrollment of over 10,000 students and is located in Clarksville, Tennessee, a community of an estimated 180,716 people located approximately 40 miles northwest of Nashville, TN.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Oversee concert hall budget.
  • Maintain inventory of equipment to include regular maintenance and upgrades of lighting, digital recording system, audio equipment, risers, and all other set pieces and tools.
  • Assist in the calendar planning process in cooperation with the Music Department Chair and the APSU Director of Facilities for the hall’s use by entities outside the music department.
  • Coordinate logistical elements of operating and maintaining the concert hall including preparation of lighting, sound, recording, livestreaming, set and stage construction, and set-up and tear-down for all performances.
  • Recruit, hire, and train student concert hall workers to include stagehands, lighting operators, sound technicians and ushers.
  • Ensure safe operation of concert hall equipment and compliance with applicable safety regulations.
  • Serve as technical director for performances of Opera Theater/Workshops.
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned in consultation with the Department Chair.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Fluency with all hardware, software, and other technical applications of the concert hall (sound amplification, lighting systems, audio recording, livestreaming, and other related systems).
  • Ability to contribute to a cohesive work environment when communicating with coworkers, supervisors, the university community, and the public.
  • Ability to effectively supervise and coordinate the work of others.
  • Fluency with database systems to maintain inventory, budgets, and other data.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work flexible work hours as events may be scheduled during the day, in the evenings, or on weekends.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical riders, and communicate with event coordinators regarding the technical aspects of the concert hall to determine event feasibility.
  • Ability to fulfill the physical requirements of the job (lifting 20-50 pounds, comfortable with heights [catwalks/ladders], and working in confined spaces).
Physical Requirements
  • Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Required Minimum Qualifications
  • Significant professional training and experience with the ability to design and build sets; design, hang, focus, program and run lighting; and design, set up, and run sound reinforcement/recording.
  • Leadership skills to organize and supervise student workers.
  • Knowledge of audio recording/editing technology, woodworking, electrical, and painting skills.
  • The ability to read music is beneficial.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Technical Theater or arts-related field.
