Position Summary | The Assistant Director of Programs for University Recreation reports to the Director of University Recreation. This position supports campus health and well-being by leading the oversight and support to creating a thriving atmosphere for University Recreation programs. The Assistant Director of Programs primarily works with Competitive Sports (Intramurals and Sport Clubs), Fitness, Govs Outdoors and Summer Camp in the department of University Recreation.
As a department leader, this position collaborates in a cross-divisional and cross-institutional approach to create a vibrant campus atmosphere that inspires and develops student health and well-being. The Assistant Director of Programs will serve as a student-centered leader who seeks to create a thriving recreation environment that contributes to the holistic success of students through supporting the development of student leaders in Competitive Sports, curating a vibrant recreation presence on campus, and promotion of initiatives that create an enriched and engaged student experience.
The Assistant Director of Programs is responsible for the supervision of two full-time staff, Coordinators for Govs Outdoors and Fitness, as well as student assistants and temporary employees for Competitive Sports and Summer Camp. Additionally, this position works directly with college students, organization management, program planning, and working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment to advance the vision of Student Affairs at Austin Peay State University. The Assistant Director of Programs will seek continuous and integrated improvements on all such matters and collaborating with campus partners to achieve division goals. |
Primary Duties and Responsibilities | Supervisory Leadership - Provide hands-on leadership and supervision for two full-time professional coordinators, for Fitness & Govs Outdoors; and direct leadership and supervision of student staff and part-time staff in the absence of full-time staff for Competitive Sports and Summer Camp.
- Oversee the hiring, supervision and mentorship, training, and professional development of direct reports, including two full-time coordinators, students and part-time staff, to achieve division and departmental goals.
- Conduct biannual performance reviews and provide strengths-based coaching to support staff development; provide merit recommendations as applicable.
- Lead staff meetings and trainings for Competitive Sports student staff/club officers and oversee Fitness, Govs Outdoors, and Summer Camp trainings in conjunction with coordinators and part-time staff.
- Communicate effectively and efficiently with all staff, students and employees within areas of responsibility, as well as other professional staff and university constituents.
Programming and Personnel - Provide strategic oversight for the development of programs, resources, and systems that support Competitive Sports, Fitness, Outdoors, and Summer Camp.
- Clarify employee roles by refining responsibilities, learning outcomes, and expectations, and provide supervision to ensure understanding of duties, equipment use, policies, safety protocols, and best practices.
- Update and utilize written records (e.g., manuals, procedures) to support operations and ensure compliance with CAS and institutional guidelines for areas of responsibility.
- Responsible for personnel scheduling to ensure adequate safety, game management and supervisory coverage for Competitive Sports, to include oversight of Fitness and Outdoors scheduling and programs, in concert with coordinators.
- Responsible for the oversight and management of Govs Ice Hockey Club, including budget management, coordinating with club officers on operations, working with university departments on sponsorships and communications, and external partners.
- Work with leadership to develop and implement policies and procedures that support an engaged student atmosphere.
- Serve as subject matter expert to faculty, staff, administrators, and community members on campus recreation.
- In concert with area coordinators, assess campus community interests, needs, resources, and national trends in campus recreation programs.
Fiscal and Facility Operations - Develop, oversee and administer the budget for Competitive Sports and Summer Camp; and oversee the Fitness and Govs Outdoors budgets in concert with the coordinators.
- In conjunction with area coordinators, oversee equipment purchase, maintenance and inventory for each area of responsibility, including intramural and sport club equipment, outdoor supplies and equipment, and all fitness equipment.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues to accommodate space usage for sports clubs, intramural sports, fitness classes, outdoor and summer camp programming and other special events/programs.
- Share responsibility for the monitoring of University Recreation facilities, primarily for areas of responsibility – fitness studios, functional training room, fitness center, rock wall, low-ropes challenge course, and intramural field.
- Maintain a functioning knowledge of operations and procedures for all areas of University Recreation and assist in departmental risk management.
- Conduct regular analysis of market conditions to recommend an operational budget for the program areas and fee structures.
- Monitor and submit all payroll and program reports for areas of responsibility.
Department and Division Leadership - Maintain open communications with the Director for University Recreation to share information and engage in issue-spotting and creative problem-solving to benefit the University community.
- Work with all University Recreation professional staff to advance the vision, mission, core values, and strategic plan of the department and division.
- As a member of the University Recreation leadership team, assist in planning, development, implementation and analysis of short- and long-term goals, learning outcomes, and departmental or division goals.
- Actively participate in University Recreation, Student Affairs and campus-wide campaigns, initiatives, projects, and/or committees.
- Work collaboratively and intentionally with campus departments and the community to expand programming and engage with a wide variety of student populations.
- Remain competent and current through professional development including self-directed research, participation in professional organizations, and networking with colleagues.
- Serve as department director in Director’s and Associate Director’s absence.
