Position Summary
Austin Peay State University is seeking an experienced Diagnostic Laboratory Director to oversee the operations of the campus diagnostic laboratory. This role requires a strong background in laboratory medicine, excellent leadership skills, and a commitment to providing high-quality patient care. The APSU Diagnostic lab works in collaboration with the ARD Student Health Center and processes samples and typical diagnostic tests for students, faculty and staff that utilize health services. These diagnostic services are typical to most labs and will provide timely and accurate diagnosis to detect and treat patients as necessary.

Austin Peay State University is a four-year public, doctoral-level university, with six colleges and four Chairs of Excellence. The University has an enrollment of over 9,000 students and is located in Clarksville, Tennessee, a community of an estimated 166,000 people located approximately 40 miles northwest of Nashville, TN.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with healthcare providers to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
  • Lead and manage the laboratory’s growth and expansion initiatives.
  • Identify and implement new technologies and services to enhance laboratory capabilities.
  • Develop and execute strategic plans to increase laboratory capacity and market presence.
  • Foster partnerships and collaborations to support the laboratory’s growth objectives.
  • Supervise and manage laboratory team.
  • Ensure the proper functioning and maintenance of laboratory equipment.
  • Monitor inventory levels and order supplies as needed.
  • Coordinate with other departments to ensure seamless patient care.
  • Provide and maintain training and competency for testing personnel.
  • Oversee completion, submission and appropriate review of proficiency test surveys.
  • Ensure patient results are performed accurately and timely.
  • Answer technical questions and resolving specimen integrity issues.
  • Assess and review quality control data and accompanying documentation for concerns, and developing corrective action plans.
  • Review calibrations and calibration verifications for each laboratory section.
  • Ensure that all analyzer maintenance is performed on schedule and reviewing documentation.
  • Maintain and update the standard operating procedures (SOP) and procedure manuals for each laboratory section.
  • Ensure compliance with all regulator agencies and applicable state standards
  • Develop and maintain quality assurance programs to monitor accuracy, consistency, and improve laboratory performance
  • Prepare and perform bi-annual accreditation inspections
  • Develop and manage the laboratory budget, as well as monitor financial performance and implement cost-saving measures.
  • Monitor infectious disease trends and report results to university administration, public health department, and Tennessee Department of Health as required.
  • Address any patient concerns or inquiries related to laboratory services.
  • Contribute to benchwork, as needed.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Basic knowledge of classic and molecular testing methods and interpretations.
  • Considerable knowledge of the operation of medical laboratory equipment.
  • Considerable knowledge of disease pathophysiology as it relates to laboratory testing.
  • Considerable technical knowledge necessary to troubleshoot test procedures and interpret laboratory results.
  • Thorough generalist knowledge of medical laboratory science.
  • Thorough knowledge of quality assurance and quality control standards.
  • Thorough knowledge of the hazards of working with potentially infectious materials and the appropriate precautions to take to avoid infection, exposure, and safe operations of a laboratory.
  • Thorough knowledge of laboratory operational policies and procedures.
  • Ability to supervise and conduct management functions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff and medical personnel.
  • Ability to research, develop and implement procedures, methods and training materials.
  • Ability to perceive colors normally.
  • Ability to analyze reports and troubleshoot problem areas.
  • Skill in organizing and coordinating multi-faceted test procedures.
  • Skill in participating, coordinating, and complying with external laboratory inspections.
Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (e.g., face coverings, gloves, lab coats, etc.);
  • Must be able to routinely lift 40lbs;
  • Must be able to stand for long periods when necessary.
Required Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science or equivalent. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS)
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in a CLIA High Complexity diagnostic laboratory, with at least 1 year in a supervisory or managerial role.
  • Must be Tennessee State Supervisor Licensure eligible
