Position Summary
The Financial Aid Specialist is responsible for reviewing financial aid applications. This role involves direct interaction with students and parents to ensure the proper disbursement of financial aid.

Austin Peay State University is a four-year public, doctoral-level university, with six colleges and four Chairs of Excellence. The University has an enrollment of over 9,000 students and is located in Clarksville, Tennessee, a community of an estimated 166,000 people located approximately 40 miles northwest of Nashville, TN.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Analyze and evaluate student financial data.
  • Verify accuracy and consistency of data from need analysis calculations and federal tax documents.
  • Perform data analysis to identify discrepancies and determine appropriate resolution actions.
  • Review federal financial aid applications to ensure files are accurate and complete for aid disbursement.
  • Counsel students and parents on verification procedures and financial aid matters.
  • Request additional information from relevant sources to complete the verification process as necessary.
  • Review verification technical references annually and stay updated on changes.
  • Transmit and track data corrections.
  • Discuss financial aid packages and payment arrangements with students and parents.
  • Maintain and update the policy manual for electronic transmissions, verification, and processing.
  • Create and update verification forms for the financial aid office annually.
  • Maintain proficiency with financial aid administration software and related computer programs.
  • Supervise and train student workers.
  • Assist in determining eligibility and issuing fee deferments.
  • Purge inactive files annually and maintain an organized active and pending filing system.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Proficiency in operating a personal computer and associated software (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.) and Ellucian Banner.
  • Effective and appropriate communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information.
  • Ability to interact effectively with diverse populations, the University community, and the public.
  • Keen attention to detail for detecting and correcting grammatical and spelling errors.
  • Capability to maintain accurate paper and electronic files.
  • Strong multitasking skills and ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Understanding and compliance with detailed federal regulations.
  • Proficiency in performing accurate mathematical computations.
  • Strong organizational, decision-making, and independent work skills.
Physical Requirements
  • Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
Required Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate’s Degree or a minimum of two years of university study.
  • Previous financial aid experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of government rules, regulations, guidelines, and procedures related to financial aid.
  • Successful completion of a background check.
  • Submission of an official transcript (if applicable) and contact information for three (3) references.
