Position Summary |
As a licensed therapist, the Counselor will provide counseling services of a preventive, supportive, and developmental nature through direct and indirect consultations with students who are experiencing psychological, social or emotional distress or dysfunction. Practice areas include delivering high-quality evidence-based evaluation and treatment to a diverse student population.
Austin Peay State University is a four-year public, doctoral-level university, with six colleges and four Chairs of Excellence. The University has an enrollment of over 9,000 students and is located in Clarksville, Tennessee, a community of an estimated 166,000 people located approximately 40 miles northwest of Nashville, TN. |
Primary Duties and Responsibilities |
- Provide brief therapy services, including individual and/or group counseling, to currently enrolled students.
- Assist clients in identifying and utilizing other campus resources and services related to student success and well-being. Provide referrals to off-campus providers for students who require more specialized services.
- Provide intake, triage, and other mental health assessments to ensure optimal delivery of services.
- Respond to student mental health crises and provide after-hours emergency coverage as needed.
- Maintain confidential case files and records.
- Coordinate and provide innovative outreach and prevention programs in key areas of student mental health and well-being.
- Collaborate with faculty, staff, and students and serve as a general resource person where student mental health and well-being are concerned.
- Provide consultation for faculty, staff, and students regarding individual students of concern who may be exhibiting signs of distress or dysfunction.

- Serve on relevant University committees as needed.
- Attend appropriate local, regional, and national meetings and conferences for professional development and to represent the department, the division, and the University.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

- Ability to effectively assess, provide therapy and evaluate students in need of counseling services.
- Knowledge of counseling theories and the ability to apply knowledge to effectively provide counseling to students.

Physical Requirements |
- Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.

Required Minimum Qualifications |
- Master’s degree in Counseling, Community Mental Health, Psychology, Social Work, Marriage & Family Therapy or related field.
- Licensure or eligibility for licensure as a Professional Counselor – Mental Health Service Provider, Social Worker, Psychological Examiner, or Marriage and Family Therapist in the state of Tennessee required within one (1) year of hire date.
- Experience working with young adults ages 17 – 24.
- A background check will be required for the successful applicant.
- An official transcript and names, addresses and phone number of three (3) references will be required for the successful applicant.
- Essential employee will be required to report to work during inclement weather and emergency or disaster situations.
